Unable to Contact IP Driver, error code 5 Windows 2008 Server hosted on Vmware

I ran into an issue where a pair of my servers lost network connectivity after installing VMWare tools.  The update disabled the TCP\IP stack.  If I tried to ping any server I received the error: “Unable to to contact IP driver, error code 5.”

The fix is to run this command:  netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

After you run this command and reboot, you will have to go back and re-specify any static IP addresses you assigned to the server.

Please note:

  1. You will have to know the local admin password, as domain authentication will not work nor will any cached credentials.
  2. This may also be a profile specific problem.  Logging on with another admin credential may correct the issue.
  3. You may have to recreate the machine SID, if the machine image was created using a template.
