VMware Tools Upgrade: The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter.

After upgrading VMware Tools on both Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 guest operating systems, the servers lost their IP Address configuration.  When I attempted to change the IP Addresses back I received the following error:

“The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter Name of adapter.”

It appears the VMware Tools upgrade uninstalled and then reinstalled the network drivers, causing the original network card and their settings to be orphaned.  The only way to view them is to show hidden devices within device manager for removal.  This KB goes into detail: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269155

THE FIX:

  • Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
  • Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1, and then press ENTER.
  • Type Start DEVMGMT.MSC, and then press ENTER.
  • Click View, and then click Show Hidden Devices.
  • Expand the Network Adapters tree.
  • Right-click the dimmed network adapter, and then click Uninstall.
  •
