OCS 2007 R2 Communicator Branding: TABS, Help Menu and Splash page messages

These steps were taken from the OCS Communicator 2007 R2 Deployment Guide and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd820019(office.13).aspx

Create the following Registry keys in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator directory.

You will need to create 4 registry keys that control the clients behavior.

Create them as follows:

1.) New String named IMWarning. This will control the IM splash page warning. Give it the value of “Instant Messaging is subject to Contoso’s E-Discovery policy. All content is archived and can be retrieved per the request of administrative staff and the representatives of the Contoso.com”.

2.) New String named TabURL. This value will be either a web URL or a file on the local machine. This is the local of the XML file, or configuration file of the communicator client branding.

3.) New String named HelpMenuURL. This value will be the URL of the Help Desk website.

4.) New String named HelpMenuText. This value will be the Displayed text of the Help Desk Site name.

The registry keys are as follows:

Create the necessary files, such as:

  • A PNG formatted image per tab. Create two in this example.
  • A XML file that contains the URL information.
  • A HTML page for each tab.  Create two in this example.

5.) Create the PNG files. You can use any picture editor to do this; however, the PNG image must be formatted as no bigger than 32 X 32 pixels in size. They work better if they are exact.

6.) Create the HTML web pages that contain alerts or info for each of your tabs. They should be unique names and can be located on your local workstation or placed on a web server. The web server will be the production mode as we could push alerts out to the entire OCS user base.

7.) Create your XML file. The file will contain the location for your tab image and URL link.

<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<tabdata>
<tab>
   <image>file:///c:/tabs/MU.png</image>
   <siteid>1</siteid>
   <name>My Co1</name>
   <tooltip>My Co1 News</tooltip>
   <contenturl>file:///c:/tabs/test.html</contenturl>
   <userid>true</userid>
   <contactid>false</contactid>
</tab>
<tab>
   <image>file:///c:/tabs/MU1.png</image>
   <siteid>2</siteid>
   <name>My Co1 2</name>
   <tooltip>My Co1 Sports</tooltip>
   <contenturl>file:///c:/tabs/test2.html</contenturl>
   <userid>true</userid>
   <contactid>false</contactid>
</tab>
</tabdata>

Once all of these are created, you must restart the communicator client.

You can copy the below text and save as a filename.reg registry file and install in one step.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator]
"IMWarning"="Instant Messaging is subject to Contoso’s E-Discovery policy. All content is archived and can be retrieved per the request of administrative staff and the representatives of Contoso.com"
"TabURL"="
file:///C:/tabs/taburl.xml"
"HelpMenuURL"="
https://help.MyCompany.com/portal/ss/"
"HelpMenuText"="Help Desk Website"

    This doesn’t work for me and I don’t see any log/error files to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?
